Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters prevent potentially fatal lung clots for people recovering from accidents and surgeries. The temporary or permanent devices are inserted into the largest vein in the body and trap clots. Unfortunately the devices are linked to a number of complications like migration, breakage, vein and organ perforation that can injure patients.

What is an IVC Filter?

22846tnInferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters are cage-like devices implanted in patients who have an increased risk of pulmonary embolism after an accident or surgery. The device traps blood clots before they can travel to vital organs such as the lungs or heart and cause life-threatening complications. IVC filters can be implanted both temporarily and permanently depending on the patients needs. In 2003, the FDA approved the first retrievable IVC filter, which quickly became popular amongst physicians and patients. In 2010 the FDA predicted that the number of IVC filters surgically implanted into patients would grow from 200,000 to over 259,000 per year.
